Reputation is the general opinion of the public towards a person, a group, or an organization. Building a positive reputation is a very important factor in not only improving your social status but also in fields, such as business and online communities such as eBay, Amazon and all sorts of other customers’ feedback oriented websites.
As it was mentioned in the book “Smart Mobs”,
“Reputation marks the spot where technology and cooperation converge”. Today’s technology and its rapid growth open up new opportunities in doing business online. To cooperate online could interchangeably be used as a way of building up trust and developing a high reputation while billions of dollars worth of transactions are facilitated through the websites between people that do not even know each other.
eBay is using a reputation system by providing feedbacks for the buyer about the seller reputation and specific product. Sellers can build up their high status through positive sales in the auction business. Constant demand for the people that wanted to share their reputation status continues to grow; that said it also shows that there is a lot of value for those people that want to extend their reputation to the other sites.
A small portion of people have still disagreed with the fact that using a reputation system through many different websites could negatively affect the overall e-commerce. There are a number of websites that have been known for providing the best online service and in fact there are many more people that agree with the usage of a reputation system in the different sites. Reputation systems will become more portable in the near future, it’s just a matter of time. eBay could be one of the founders in creating and building up your reputation which eventually could help to move out to the other websites. eBay created its name as one of the finest services which uses a system of customer’s feedback to publicly rate each member's reputation.

Linas - do you think that craigs list - as something that is somewhat similar to ebay as it is person-person selling. Do you think that a rating system would be beneficial for craigs list? Also, what do you think of my idea that small e-tailers will eventually be run out of business because of huge retailers such as Amazon? Let me know what you think - http://blogyale.blogspot.com/
i do believe that craigslist should have a rating system, i do not think it really matters how big your company is or the companies status in the e-commerce, everyone likes to get feedback, having a rating system could help attract more buyers and will make overall online business more profitable. I doubt that small e-tailers will run out of business because the rating system will eventually become portable and it will be usable through many different sites. People that sell will have more options to sell their product on amazon or craigslist.
